I want to thank every player on both teams, all the coaches who have given so unselfishly to the program, Tim Carroll, Amy Dyer-Kelley, Sharyl Porter and Missy Dean. Without all of you Midcoast Warriors would not succeed.

I also want to thank a great group of parents from both teams. The work and sacrifices you have all made to benefit your children in this venture did not go un-noticed. Myself and all the coaches are grateful for all you do to help make this all possible.

This year I found that working 70-80 hours a week, running my own photography business and running a basketball club while trying to coach as well was just too much for one person. Maybe it's my age, but I refuse to believe that.

Something had to change and I have spent the last couple of months putting that plan of action into effect. I left VillageSoup, my 70-80 hour a week job last week and have restarted my former business Maine Sports Report. I am very happy to be back doing this as it better suits me.

My hours have been reduced dramatically, my health is getting better every day and my desire to continue coaching is coming back and next year I will take on one of the three teams we will have.

We have one more tournament for the 14U team with a three of the 13U girls that have expressed interest in continuing coming up to help them out. That will be May 30, 31 at Hampden. That will be it for this spring.

We will be doing fundraisers for both teams during the summer. The 14U team wants new uniforms and will be doing a variety of events this summer to raise the money to do so. The 13U team is also encouraged to do some fundraisers this summer. Car wash, bake sales, those kinds of things will bring in some good money. Try to plan one fundraiser per month in June, July and Aug.

One event we could all do together that is a good time and raises quiet a bit of money is a bowl-athon. Each girl gets pledges for so much per pin fall in their best string. We bowl two or three strings each, have some lunch and make a fun day of it.

We also can have a foul shooting fundraiser, as I have gym time at Rockland District Middle School this summer.

Lastly for now, but very important. The current AAU season ends Aug. 31 and players, teams and coaches have to sign up for the 2009-2010 season in Sept. Last year we did tryouts and I think that is not the way I want to do things in the future. I want to talk with the players that we are looking to bring on and be sure they are committed to playing and that they fit into our teams.

With that in mind, I need a list of players that at this time plan on coming back next year. I understand that things change, but if you are planning on coming back next year e-mail me and tell me so. That way I will have the fall and early spring to talk to people about filling any holes.

Any questions call me at 975-2311 or e-mail me at: ron@mainesportsreport.com

Thanks for a great year
Ron

Warriors 14U compete at Maine Maniacs high school tournament

The Midcoast Warriors 14U girls team was one of 12 teams to compete May 3 at the Augusta Civic Center in the first tournament sponsored by the Maine Maniacs Basketball Club from Brunswick.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 237px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_tM8kBkhCP94/SgIZKZK0qvI/AAAAAAAABLg/j4maxuSdROw/s400/RON_8012.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5332852575105755890" />
Midcoast Warriors 14U team members, front row from left, Brighde Curtin (Rockland), Taylor Porter (Camden Hills), Alanna Vose (Medomak Valley), Taylor Mazurek (Georges Valley); back row, assistant coach Sharyl Porter, Hanna Plourde (Rockland), Jackay Richards (Camden Hills), Laura Johanson (Camden Hills), Hannah Sirois (Rockland), Sarah Steele (Camden Hills), and coach Missy Dean. Brianna Bodman three and Paige Proffitt and Madison Cummings two each.

Thanks to 14U Warrior team members Jessica Veilleux and Jill Bradbury for helping with the coaching duties and showing their support for their sister team.

Next the Warriors took on a tough Medomak 8th grade team and won 33-24 in a hard fought battle.

Again the Warriors benefited from another strong effort by Brook with 10 points and great hustle on defense; Cox added eight; Littlefield seven; Bodman four and Carroll and Courtney Drinkwater two each.

"Cox did a great job on the boards," said coach Tim Carroll. "Second efforts on offensive boards got her scores. Although no points, Emma Davis was tenacious on defense forcing many turnovers."

In a must win game to advance to the championship the Warriors defeated Lincoln 36-26.

McKenzie Thibodeau paded the Warriors in this game with 12 points; Littlefield 10;Drinkwater five; Dugan four; Carroll three and Cox two.

"McKenzie really stepped up this game," said Carroll. "I think she showed her true potential of being a very good basketball player. She played both ends of the court very well. Ashley was beaten, battered, abused and did a fantastic job holding it together. Offensively and defensively, Ashley was the key to this win. A true "warrior" in this respect. Courtney has a way of setting the pace of the game when needed as the point guard. She pushes when necessary and has the ability to slow things down as well."

In the championship game against a much larger more physical team in Boothbay the Warriors showed their true for battling back from a one point deficit at the half to capture a 35-29 win.

"Very hard fought game," said Carroll. "At half-time, down by one, our girls looked exhausted. Looks are deceiving. Our girls fought to the very end and showed they were true champions in a day of hard fought, physically challenging games."

Scoring for the Warriors were Dugan with 10 points; Littlefield seven; Cox and Davis six each; Drinkwater four and Thibodeau two.

Carroll played in the post this game and showed her potential as a strong forward. Coach Hawkes put her on Boothbay's tallest player (had Casey by about 6 inches) and did an outstanding job shutting her down. Another true "Warrior" as far as taking on somebody twice your size, taking a beating and still fighting to the end. Job well done Casey, that's the kind of player we have been waiting to see from you.

"I am very pleased with Brooke who showed her potential as well," said coach Hawkes. "Very consistent ball player on both ends. Brooke has the ability to break open a game and did so consistently this tournament. Strong ball handling, good shooting and able to outrun just about anyone."

Emma lived up to her nickname as Coach Hawkes calls her, PITBULL! All over the court and very frustrating to the opposite team. She is wherever the ball is, fighting, kicking (no biting.....I don't think) her way to get the ball. I think she drove Boothbay's offense crazy by being wherever the ball was....usually stealing it.

"Overall, players came into their own showing their potential as ballplayers this weekend, and really stepped up as a team and fought together to deserve the title of champions," said coach Carroll. "I think I can speak for coach Hawkes, as I know I was as well, very proud of this T-E-A-M this weekend and their efforts."

Click here to view photos from the tournament

13U squad to compete in local tournament

The 13U Midcoast Warriors will be competing in a local tournament at Medomak Valley High School and Medomak Middle School that is being hosted by the Medomak Valley All Sports Boosters.

The tournament may start Friday night but with the lack of teams will most likely be all day Saturday.

With four or five of our players gone this weekend, this is an opportunity for some players to really step up.

I will send out a schedule as soon as I receive it along with the rules for the games. "Very strong underneath."

Other scorers were Lexi Nelligan and Brook Dugan with eight points each; Emma Davis three; Baille Cox and Coutney Drinkwater had two each; and Katrina Lapham one.

The second game Saturday was against the Poland 13U team and the Warriors defeated them 25-8.

"Again, the team played well together," said Carroll. "Tough full court defense. The team really hustled and put good pressure on a much bigger team."

Dugan and Nelligan worked well together on steals, pushing the ball up the court on fast breaks. Dugan fed Nelligan five times on fast breaks to net her 10 points.

Also scoring were Cox, who did a nice job underneath, with four points; Phoebe Ferriaolo and Littlefield had three each; Drinkwater and Mckenzie Thibodeau each added two; and Lapham one.

After winning the first two the Warriors suffered their first loss 34-25 to the Gardiner 13U team.

The team lost steam down the stretch, running out of gas. Gardiner moved the ball well and controlled the boards with some very quick players. The full court pressure was hard for the Warriors to contend with.

Lapham had a very good game. She took it to the hoop and had some key outside shots near the end to keep the game close, one being a three pointer. Her effort brought the game to within five at one point. Lapham ended with 10 points; Nelligan five; Cox four' and Drinkwater, Ferriaolo and Littlefield two each.

On Sunday the action moved to the University of Southern Maine in Gorham where AOB 13U handed the Warriors their second loss 27-24 in a close game.

"Rebounds and getting back on defense really hurt us," said Carroll. "Again, forwards showed strong moves underneath, good positioning and staying with it kept us in the game."

Scoring for the Warriors were, Nelligan with nine points; Littlefield seven; Thibodeau four; Madison Cummings two; and Casey Carroll and Brook Dugan one each.

Up next were the Jr. Eddies who defeated the Warriors in another close game 29-25.

"Hard fought game back and forth," said Carroll. "The Eddies put good full court pressure on our guards. With two minutes to go we were up by one, but pressure by Eddies with two quick steals for layups put us behind and we couldn't recover."

Nelligan paced the Warriors with 10 points; Littlefield nine; Drinkwater five; and Davis one.

The final game, which was a back to back game for the Warriors was against the Poland 13u team and the Warriors outlasted them for a 16-11 win.

"We worked on controlling the pace of this game," said Carroll. "We ran our offense well and got the ball inside to our forwards. Forwards kicking it back out spread the scoring out."

Littlefield had four points to lead the Warriors in this low scoring match up. Nelligan, Carroll and Lapham had three each; Cummings two; and Thibodeau one.

"Good weekend overall for the girls," said Carroll. "Came away with knowing what we need to work on and had a good feeling of the team coming together. They all showed compassion and heart in the game."

Warriors split Sunday's games

The 14U Midcoast Warriors split their games Sunday at the MB Nation Invitational No.1 tournament in Portland and So. Portland. Saturday's games were played at Lincoln Middle School while Sunday the games were at Southern Maine Community College.

For the weekend the Warriors were 3-1 and stand at 5-2 on the season.

In the first game the Warriors played the 14U Sparks and easily defeated them 59-27.

Jill Bradbury, playing an outstanding game paced the Warriors with 20 points; Kennadi Grover, 11; Hannah Plourde and Taylor Mazurek, five each; Alanna Vose and Jessica Veilleux, four each; Taylor Porter, three; Brighde Curtin, Sarah Steele and Rebecca Picard, two each; and Hannah Sirois, one. 11 of the 14 Warrior players scored in this balanced attack. The Warriors were 12-of-23 (52 percent)from the foul line.

In the second game the Warriors faced their toughest competition on the season thus far in the Mb Nation 14U Blue team. The Nation passed the ball well, ran the floor and their overall conditioning wore down the Warriors.

The first half saw the Nation take a 24-21 lead as the Warriors gave them more then they were used to seeing from another 14U team this year.

The second half was belonged more to the Nation as the Warriors ran out of gas and the depth of the Nation team just outplayed the Warriors.

Scoring for the Warriors in the loss were Vose with 12 points in an all out effort; Veilleux, 11; Sirois, seven; Bradbury, three; Grover, two; and Plourde, one.

The 14U team will take next weekend off from tournaments as many of the players are heading to Bar Harbor for the annual Harbor House tournament. They will return to action on Saturday March 28 and Sunday March 29 in Waterville at an MBR.ORG Round Robin at Thomas College.

Scoring wise from the tournaments the Warriors really picked up their game this weekend. They outscored their opponents 225-143 averaging 56.25 points per game while holding the opponents to 35.75 ppg.

For the season thus far the Warriors are averaging 44 ppg while allowing 27.71 ppg. Solid pressure defense has been the key for the Warriors.

Warriors have a good day

The 14U Midcoast Warriors went 2-0 Saturday in their first tournament day winning 59-26 and 71-35 against a couple of good 13U teams.

Due to the lack of 14U teams one team, the Warriors, had to play down to fill out the schedule. We didn't really have to, that was just the way the schedule was done for unknown reasons.

However the important part is the team got to play and improve. Ball movement was exceptional, shooting was good and foul shots continued to improve, 8-of-15 the first game and 12-of-19 the second.

Game one against MB-Nation Blue Kennadi Grover led the scoring with 15 points; Jackie Richards added 11; Alanna Vose nine; Hannah Sirois eight; Jessica Veilleux six; Jill Bradbury four; and Taylor Porter, Hannah Plourde and Taylor Mazurek chipped in two each.

In the second game against The 13U Maniacs, Sirois had 15 points including 5-of-5 from the foul line; Grover 13; Richards nine; Veilleux eight; Mazurek five; Sarah Steele four; Porter three; and Laura Johanson added two.

14U game schedule for March 8 (Updated)

Here are the results for the three games Sunday, March 8 at Colby College.

9 a.m. - Court 1 vs. Purple Reign — Lost 18-15 in a low scoring game. Warriors could not buy a basket and foul shots could have changed the game.

2:15 p.m. - Court 3 vs Matrix — Won 38-15, Kennadi Grover had a big game with 15 points while Hannah Sirois added 10. The team in just it's first year finished in fourth place at the state tournament for U13 teams.

This year we hope to open up the AAU experience to a team of 12U players, a new 13U team and many of last years team moving up to a 14U team.

Tryouts are open for the 12U and 13U teams to any age eligible player from Knox, Waldo and Lincoln County. If the numbers are more than expected we will look into two teams.

The AAU experience is a great opportunity for girls to meet players from all over the state. It is not for everyone, as it is not a social club, it is about playing the game of basketball, improving your skills and meeting new people that can open up opportunities for you as you progress through high school.

It takes a commitment to play on an AAU team, practice at least twice a week and games and or tournaments almost every weekend.

The main season runs from Feb. 7 until the last weekend of April. AAU tournaments and games are available year round and if interest is there the season can be extended.

The Midcoast Warriors AAU Club charges each new player $300 and that covers all tournaments, AAU registration and a uniform to wear. Returning players are charged $250.00 per year. All team members will be required to fund raise, we will plan a foul shooting fund raiser to help provide basketball, gym rental when we need it and allow us to play in more tournaments and games.

The coaching staff at this time consists of Ron Hawkes and Tim Carroll. We obviously will be looking for a third coach if we end up with three teams.

For parents, AAU can be exhausting as there is a lot of travel, but car pooling and taking turns traveling can save wear and tear. What we expect of the parents is to help organize the fund raisers, team dinners, overnight accommodations from time to time (the girls favorite part) and media relations. Parents can also help in getting sponsors to help off set the cost. We can place small banners and links to their web sites on our links page.

If you love basketball the AAU experience can be very rewarding. The time and energy you as a player and or a parent put forth will be well spent.

For any questions and or more information feel free to call Ron Hawkes at 975-2311 or e-mail: ron@ronhawkes.com. You can also e-mail coach Carroll at thcarroll@adelphia.net

U14 team tryouts will be held following the close of the regular high school season pending local teams playoff positions. Check back here for times and dates.
As the season approaches

Well, school is just around the corner and that means that it will not be long before basketball season is here.

In order to help get everyone ready we are in the process of setting up an open gym starting the first week of October at the middle school for seventh and eighth grade girls. If we get the times we want it will be from 5-7 p.m. every Sunday evening.

The Rockland Travel Team Club will be holding tryouts this year for another seventh and eighth grade AAU team that will run from the end of the Busline League season until the AAU state championships in the end of April. Those tryout will be before the Busline season is over or just afterwards.

We will also be having tryouts for a !4U team that will play hopefully into the summer. Obviously this is for girls that are dedicated to basketball and are able to play in tournaments Friday's Saturday's and Sunday's.

Any parents with any questions can contact me at 975-2311 or e-mail me at ron.hawkes@yahoo.com

Keep checking back here for more updates as we have them available for you.

Season update

Well the travel team season is over and it was by my account a very successful season that I think everybody got a lot from.

All the pledge money from the Foul Shooting is in and after paying all our bills we have a balance to start next year with of $1085.00.

We will look at uniforms for the team next year and raising more money with another foul shooting fund raiser so that we can keep this travel team free to every player that wants to participate.

I will be looking for basketball opportunities this summer for the incoming eighth graders. The incoming ninth graders, be on the lookout for the naming of the new varsity girls coaches at Rockland and Georges Valley high schools. These girls have now played between 30 and 35 games this season. Watching them on Saturday against Camden and Medomak, one saw the results of that schedule. This group has gelled as a team, has respect for each other, and plays and practices with one purpose in mind, so that every girls improves her game which in turn helps the team succeed.

I am very proud of this team and am going to miss these girls. I will miss spending time every week with them. They have enriched my life as a coach and as an adult trying to help them grow as individuals. I have seen these girls grow in ability, in confidence, in self esteem and mature into a group that understands its not just about them, it's about the team.

I also have enjoyed the parents of these girls, they let me coach, they let me take time with their children away from the home and listened as I tried to make a difference in their growth as individuals. Thank you parents for allowing me this time with your kids, I think we can all walk away knowing we like your children have grown and made some new friendships that will be lasting.

To all of the players, thanks for having me as your coach. It has been an honor to be part of your team. You are all amazing young ladies that were a blast to coach and even more fun just to be around. Such personalities with all of you and yet we managed to walk onto a court and play like you were all old friends that have been together for ever. It takes a special group to do that and girls, you are all very special.

Thanks again and hope to see some of you playing AAU basketball. There is still a lot to be played.

Rockland concludes travel team season

The Rockland Travel Team Club concluded its first season with a 16-4 record after competing in the HAL tournament at the Lincolnville School Friday and Saturday going 3-1.

Three teams finished 3-1, Rockland, Medomak 8 and Camden 8.

For Rockland they defeated Boothbay Friday night after opening the game with a 12-0 run and using solid defense to put the game away early.

Saturday morning Rockland defeated Belfast in a good game where everyone contributed to the win.

In Rockland's third game they trailed Camden the whole game, sometimes by as many as 12 points before fighting their way back in the second half to finally fall by one point to the cross-town rival in a heated game.

In the final game Rockland was able to hold onto a slim led heading into the final two minutes before putting away a very tough Medomak 8 team. Casey Carroll, Zoey Proctor, Danessa MacDonald and Kennadi Grover provided more scoring power and tough defense than the Mount View 8th could handle.

In the second game the score was 17-16 at the half with Rockland holding the one point lead. Jessica Veilleux, Jill Bradbury, Curtin, Taylor Mazurek and Grover out scored Gardiner 30-11 in the second half as they dominated play.

Bradbury had an outstanding game, not coming off the floor the entire game as girls were rotated in and out around her. Her passion for the game was obvious as she played tremendous defense and had numerous assists through out the game.

Mazurek proved that Saturday's performance was not a fluke as she played outstanding basketball with great defense, a bundle of steals and a few points to boot. Mazurek matured into a confident, hard working basketball player this weekend and other teams had better get ready for her to fully explode in the next year or two. This young lady is going to be an outstanding player at the high school level.

From a coaching standpoint, this is simply an amazing team. I am so proud that I get to call you my team. I know coach Carroll is very excited to be part of this team and his help was greatly appreciated this weekend and always.

The Rockland Travel Team Club now stands at 12-2 on the season with about six more games to play.

Rockland shines in three games at Waterville

The Rockland Travel Team Club played outstanding basketball for thee games Saturday during the Waterville tournament at the Alfond Boys and Girls Club winning all three games.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_tM8kBkhCP94/R9yMDHQX_cI/AAAAAAAAAmU/efBSPTGvIJk/s400/WRJH_4701.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5178167656684453314" />

The Eagles started the day with an exciting game against the Purple Reign of Augusta winning 49-41 in a battle from start to finish. The Purple Reign is an AAU type team with kids from four different schools.

This was a game that was important to the Eagles to get back on track after losing back-to-back games the previous weekend in Boothbay.

Thomaston's Jessica Veilleux led all scorers with 16 points followed by Jill Bradbury with 12 and Kennadi Grover with 11.

While the three Thomaston girls led the way offensively it was the play of Taylor Mazurek that sparked the team to the win. Outstanding passing, great defense, and solid ball handling helped to give the entire team a shot of confidence.

In the second game of the day the Eagles got the seventh graders a lot of playing time playing against the Messalonskee (Dostie) team winning 40-31. Veilleux led the scoring again with 13 while Grover had 11.

Hannah Plourde, Casey Carroll, Danessa MacDonald and Zoey Proctor all played exceptional defense and had numerous assists in the game.

The Third game of the day was against Messalonskee (Bourgoin). They picked up a few players from the first Messalonskee team and a couple of ninth graders to take the Eagles on. Rockland would have nothing to do with it and went out to a 15-4 lead and sailed to a 51-15 win with everybody contributing.

Grover led the scoring with 19 points and a solid game on the boards. Veilleux added 14 points.

Mackenzie Tucker joined into the game with some amazing play on both sides of the ball. Tucker had five points, numerous rebounds, and a couple of steals while playing strong defense.

The Eagles have two more games Sunday, 12 p.m. against Mount View 8 and 2 p.m. against Gardiner.

After the games the team went back to the hotel for a swim and a pizza party where I was able to get them not to turn away every time I pointed a camera at them.

<img style="display:block; We have been given five games, which I think is great. The Tournament promoter thought that where we were staying up in Waterville we wouldn't mind some extra games. He was right.

The schedule is perfect for our weekend. We have three games on Saturday, all over by 5 p.m. so we have the night to do something. On Sunday our first game is 11 am so we can sleep in a little play two game with our last game over by 3 pm and we can be home by 4:30. I was very pleased with the schedule and I think we will be playing some good teams.

The tournament is at the
ALFOND YOUTH CENTER-WATERVILLE AREA BOYS/GIRLS CLUB-YMCA 126 NORTH STREET IN WATERVILLE.

Here it is:
SATURDAY MARCH 15
11:00 VS PURPLE REIGN
2:00 VS MESSALONSKEE (DOSTIE)
4:00 VS MESSALONSKEE (BOURGOIN)
SUNDAY MARCH 16
12:00 VS MT VIEW 8
2:00 VS GARDINER

I will get the full schedule on Wednesday for the other teams so maybe we can find a game of two that we can all sit and watch.

Directions:Click on the Larger Map link below for complete directions:

Camden 8th ends Boothbay tournament for Rockland

The Rockland Travel Team Club (7-2) ran into a tough second opponent Saturday at the Boothbay tournament falling to Camden 8th grade 45-22.

Camden took an early lead in this one and never looked back.
